...You're something else.
This man was something else, that was for sure. He was a bit more business-like in front of the others, albeit somewhat eccentric. The eccentricity of the man was something that never changed, no matter who talked to him, but the degree of it changed drastically based on whether, or not you were Raine Kishimori. In other words, he was a little more crazy when she was around, but she was used to this. She could handle it.[/size][/blockquote]
But however eccentric he was, there was one thing he didn't do anywhere but with her, and that was care for someone. It didn't matter who it was, but so long as it wasn't her, he didn't care. She was his only exception to the rule, and she knew this fact well. In fact, she was much of the same way, even though she maintained the business-like exterior most of the time. Just as cover on a book can be misleading, so was she. She quietly obeyed Zenaku and allowed him to experiment using her body, while showing hardly anything aside from a business-like demeanor. Underneath, however, she was just like any other woman her age, still angry and hurt by the loss of her twin brother... all while being madly in love with Zenaku.
No matter how much she loved him, however, she wouldn't allow herself to bother him with it, and simply stayed far out of his way, trying to contribute something useful to his research. This was how it had been for the past several years. She had hardened her heart with her resolve to simply stand aside and help him destroy the chains of fate, but he had destroyed even that. They would always be Raine and Zenaku, even when their bonds were destroyed? He really was something else.
Ugh, did he have to smile softly again? His words wreaked havoc on her heart as it was. He didn't need to toss that smile into the mix. Still, she liked it, and she felt her cheeks colour a bit before she had the chance to look away. Damn. He probably saw that. Now, she was in for it. He was probably going to tease her somehow, some way. Even if he didn't do it now, he was going to do it later. Great. Just great.
She couldn't keep her gaze averted for long, however. With another strange exclamation, the doctor knelt on the floor with his arms outstretched theatrically like some Shakespearian actor. She would have rolled her eyes and slapped her forehead with her palm had she not known he was at least semi-serious about this. Joking around like a clown, but somewhat serious. This was the Zenaku Gaki she used to know, alright. Instead of the facepalm, she smirked faintly and fixed a rather strange gaze on the man kneeling before her. "Oh really? Luscious, hm? If I'm so luscious, I wonder why Lament's my true name and not that?" she asked, half-teasing him. Her humor was, in comparison to his, usually quite dry and almost dripping in sarcasm. She never used to be this snarky, but burying her twin brother at the young age of 14 had changed her irrevocably.
Seeing his goofy grin change into a more serious expression, she watched the Fighter get to his feet. Her heart throbbed faintly when she heard him say that he might die one day. She knew that one day, he would, but she tried her best not to think of that. She hated it, to be honest, and wanted to pretend as if that man would go on living forever. It wasn't just because she loved him, either. She hated watching people die. It reminded her of Skye, her brother. Whenever they experimented on a subject, and the effects were irreversable and seemingly killing them, she either sent them out to another part of the lab to die or left instructions to her assistants and left to wait it out. If only she'd get over that, already. It'd been a long time since then, after all.
However, the rest of his words cheered her up again, though she couldn't help but feel somewhat confused. If he trusted her the most, why was she at the bottom of the chain of command? Her chair, the Earth Chair, was the bottom rung out of all the Cathedras Elementorum, while he, the Void Chair, was at the very top, with the Wind Chair immediately below him. If she was the only one he truly trusted, why was she the one beneath everyone else? Was this trust a more recent thing, or was he trying to "be fair" and spread out the power to the others? Pff, there was hardly any way it could have been that. He didn't care about anyone but himself or her, after all. "...Is... that so? Then, let me ask you this: why am I Earth Chair?" It was a legitimate question, and one that she hoped he would deign to answer.
Everything else was true. He had her totally pegged. She wouldn't leave even if the facility was about to explode, so long as he was still there. She had sworn to put her life in jeopardy alongside his when it came to the experiments, after all, and leaving when their bond was dissolved was out of the question. The only reason she'd leave was if he knocked her out and relocated her while she was unconscious. She loved him far too much to even dream otherwise.
When he lifted her arm and asked her if she could stand, she nodded, smiling a faint bit. Even if it felt strange, she liked having the old Zenaku around again. It was probably just for the moment, too, but it was nice. It was nostalgic, even. Letting him help her up, she got to her feet, stumbling a bit before she fell lightly against his chest. Blushing a bit, she pulled herself back, hoping he wouldn't be upset by such a thing. She had heard his heart beating, and everything. It was just too much and too embarrassing for her. "S-Sorry... Zenaku... I lost my balance," she muttered quietly, trying to compose herself. Today was just very, very awkward.
